Paul Atkinson, a member of Leighton Fun Runners, will take on the 26.2 mile challenge as part of the club’s support for their Charity of the Year - LB Mencap!
Paul is no stranger to marathon running, having previously completed Brighton Marathon in April 2024 with just six weeks of training, which resulted in him finishing in the medical tent. He also took on Snowdonia Marathon in October 2025 which he did finish despite stopping for tea and cake with Santa at mile 25. He’s taking the London Marathon much more seriously and has been training with support from the club as he prepares for the challenge. He has set up a JustGiving page to support his fundraising efforts.
Paul said: “I was beyond thrilled to bag a ballot place for the London Marathon on 26th April through Leighton Fun Runners.
I’ve always been more about having fun than chasing times, but London Marathon is THE marathon. I feel incredibly fortunate to be representing the club at such a prestigious event, and this time I wanted to train properly and give it the respect it deserves.
I want to give a huge thanks to coach John Kirwan and the entire Leighton Fun Runners crew for helping me get to the start line in the best shape possible.
The club recently chose Leighton Buzzard Mencap as a very worthy Charity of the Year, so this felt like the perfect opportunity to kick off our fundraising and hopefully, together as a club, we can make a real impact in our community.”
Leighton Buzzard Mencap supports many children and adults with learning disabilities and their families across Leighton Buzzard and the surrounding area, providing a safe, welcoming space where people can build friendships, grow in confidence, and feel truly included.
The charity is a small, volunteer led organisation rooted in the local community, with all of its activities run by dedicated volunteers who generously give their time to support others. From weekly clubs to inclusive social opportunities, everything it offers is shaped around the needs of local people and families. The charity relies heavily on community support to continue its work and is always keen to hear from anyone interested in volunteering or supporting in any way.
For many of the people they support, these sessions are far more than just activities, they are a lifeline. A place to belong, to feel valued, and to be part of a community that celebrates them for who they are. For families, this can be just as important, offering reassurance, connection and a sense of support.
Funds raised through Paul’s challenge will help ensure these services can continue, from weekly social clubs and accessible activities to opportunities that reduce isolation, encourage independence and support wellbeing for both individuals and their families.
Daisy Axtell-Powell, Trustee at Leighton Buzzard Mencap, said: “This is a really special moment for us, having our first London Marathon runner is something we’re incredibly excited about. The funds Paul raises will make a genuine difference, helping us provide safe, inclusive spaces where people with learning disabilities can build friendships, gain confidence and feel a true sense of belonging. We are so grateful to Leighton Fun Runners for choosing us as the charity of the year, and we can’t wait to cheer Paul on. We wish him the very best of luck for the big day.”
